The Exaltation of the Holy Cross (629) "Towards the end of the reign of Phocas, Chosroes, King of Persia, says the legend of the Breviary, took Jerusalem, where he put to death several thousand Christians and carried off to Persia the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, which Helen had deposited on Mount Calvary. Heraclius, the successor of Phocas, had recourse to many fasts and prayers, imploring with great fervour the help of God. He assembled an army and defeated Chosroes. Heraclius who was loaded with ornaments of gold and precious stones was held back by an invincible force at the entrance gate of Mount Calvary, in vain were his efforts to enter. As the Emperor and all those who witnessed the scene were astounded, Zacharias, Bishop of Jerusalem, said to him: "Consider, O Emperor, that with these triumphal ornaments you are far from imitating the poverty of Jesus Christ and His humility in bearing His Cross." Heraclius thereupon doffed his splendid garb and walked barefooted with a common cloak on his shoulders, to Calvary, where he again deposited the Cross. The feast of the exaltation of the holy Cross on the original spot, the anniversary of which was celebrated on this day, became of great importance." - St. Andrew Missal

When I am anxious or uncertain, strengthen my faith and remind me to trust in God’s perfect timing. Open the doors that are according to His holy will and give me courage to accept whatever He sends. If you only go to Mass to “get something out of it,” you may be missing the whole point... The Mass was never meant to entertain us. It was never meant to compete for our attention or prove that Catholicism is worth our time. The Mass is first about God. We come to worship Him, hear His Word, unite ourselves to the sacrifice of Christ, and receive Jesus truly present in the Eucharist. So the value of Mass does not depend on whether you liked the music, enjoyed the homily, or walked away feeling emotional. Shia LaBeouf once put it this way: “The Mass isn’t about selling you Catholicism; it’s about the worship of Almighty God, of which we are privileged to take part.” That changes everything. You are not sitting in the pews as an audience waiting to be impressed. You are standing before God and being invited into the sacrifice of Jesus made present on the altar. Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19). Even on the Sundays when you feel distracted, tired, dry, or completely unmoved, God is still worthy of your worship. If you felt absolutely nothing at Mass, would you still go because you believe God deserves your worship? Someone struggling with Mass may need this reminder today


Father Tim Vakoc was a U.S. Catholic Army chaplain who would travel to remote places in Iraq just to celebrate Mass for two or three soldiers. After suffering devastating brain and eye injuries in a 2004 roadside bombing while returning from Mass, he remained severely disabled until his death in 2009.
