What if the struggle you keep hiding is exactly why one little-known saint may understand you so well? Saint Gemma Galgani died at only 25. But before she died, she knew serious illness, intense pain, frightening temptation, and deep spiritual battles. She loved Jesus fiercely, especially in His Passion. So when suffering came, she did not let it pull her away from Him. She kept turning back to Jesus. But the trials did not stop. Accounts from Gemma’s life describe fierce temptations and attacks from the devil. Again and again, she answered them with prayer, trust in Jesus, devotion to Mary, and the Cross. That is why what happened years later is so striking. Father Alfredo Pallotta, a Passionist priest and longtime exorcist who served at Saint Gemma’s sanctuary in Italy, said Gemma often helped him during exorcisms. He even called her “a great advocate for exorcists.” But Gemma has no power apart from God. Every grace comes from God through Jesus Christ. The Church teaches that the saints in Heaven are alive in Christ, care for us, and intercede for us before God. We can ask them to pray for us. And this is where Gemma’s story becomes personal. She is especially invoked by people suffering from headaches, back pain, and spiritual temptation. She knew what it was like to hurt. She knew fear. She knew what it was like to keep fighting when the battle did not quickly disappear. So if you are carrying pain no one sees, fighting the same temptation again, or feeling worn down by fear, remember this: You do not have to fight alone. The saints do not replace Jesus. They pray for us and lead us closer to Him. Saint Gemma Galgani, pray for us.

Don’t wait until you lose everything to find out what actually matters... Money, success, attention, comfort, and even the people we love can be good gifts. But none of them can take the place of God. They can make life easier for a while, but they cannot give your soul what it was created for. Jesus asked, “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Mark 8:36). That is why St. Augustine said, “He who has God has everything; he who has everything but God has nothing.” This does not mean Christians will never suffer or feel empty. It means our deepest hope is not built on what can be lost. When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. Someone you know may need this reminder today.

A woman walked into Fulton Sheen’s confessional and told him: “I’m only here to kill time.” She admitted she was a prostitute. Then she revealed something even darker. She claimed that after being arrested and sent to live with nuns, she had made a pact with the devil: if she made nine sacrilegious Communions, she believed he would help her escape. Then she ran out of the church. Sheen could have let her go. Instead, he asked every penitent who came to confession that night to pray a Rosary for her conversion. When the confessions ended, Sheen remained before the Blessed Sacrament through the night, praying for her. Then, as the sun began to rise… she came back. She returned to the confessional. Sheen heard her confession. And a soul that had seemed completely lost was reconciled to God. Sheen understood something many of us forget: No soul is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. Sometimes the greatest thing you can do for a sinner is refuse to stop praying for them.

Someone in Purgatory may be waiting for the prayer you keep forgetting to pray.  They died in God’s friendship and are being purified before entering Heaven. They cannot earn new merit for themselves, but the Church teaches that we can help them through our prayers, sacrifices, indulgences, and especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is not a new Catholic idea. Scripture itself shows God’s people praying for the dead in 2 Maccabees 12. St. Alphonsus Liguori said: → “There is no surer path to Heaven than aiding the Holy Souls in Purgatory.” Think about that. Praying for the souls in Purgatory is an act of mercy for people who may have no one left on earth praying for them. And when those souls finally enter Heaven, the saints have long encouraged the faithful to trust that they will remember those who helped them. Your prayer today could help a soul reach Heaven.

The Virgin of Remedies of Pampanga (Latin: Virgo Remediorum de Pampangensis) also known as Vírgen de los Remedios de Pampanga is a Roman Catholic image of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated by Capampangan Catholics as the official patroness of Pampanga, Philippines.

Pope Pius XII granted a Pontifical decree of coronation to the image on 15 July 1956. Its feast day is annually celebrated on September 8th and is often paired with a Crucifix called Santo Cristo del Perdon (English: the Holy Christ of Forgiveness) widely held by pious believers to combat Communism.

History

The original devotion to Our Lady of Good Remedy dates back to the twelfth century, when it was started in France by the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives. The Spanish brought it to the Philippines. In 1624, the Catholic priest Juan Guevara, O.S.A. installed a namesake statue from Andalucia, Spain in Malate Church.^[1]

In the 1950s after the Second World War, the province of Pampanga was plagued with Communism which threatened both the Catholic religion and social order in the Philippines. The lower and the middle class laity conflicted with wealthy landowners, which caused much political unrest in the region.^[2]

The first Bishop of San Fernando, Caesar Maria Guerrero y Rodriguez decided to revive the Marian devotion (introduced to Manila and Pampanga in 1574 by the Spanish) in an attempt to ease tensions. Guerrero was a native of Malate, Manila, where the local church enshrined a similar image of Our Lady of Remedies.^[2]

Bishop Guerrero requested the image of the Virgen de los Remedios, already venerated as Our Lady of Remedies from Baliti, Pampanga to be borrowed by San Fernando to help with a new apostolate working towards peace and reconciliation, called Cruzada de Penitencia y Caridad (Crusade of Penance and Charity). Various towns took turns hosting the image. Great piety and monetary donations were garnered primarily due to the wealthy noblewomen and widows who contributed into the religious group, along with the consistent religious processions and recitations of Rosary which made the devotion popular among the masses. A system of bylaws for the apostolate was created, making the group more organized and official which helped it to grow and increased ecclesiastical recognition.^[3]

By 1954, the people of Baliti, Pampanga, became adamant in requesting that their image be returned to their town. As a result, Bishop Guerrero commissioned the santero artist Victoriano Siongco to carve a larger image of the Virgin Mary for the official use of the Crusade, and the Baliti image was returned to its original parish.^[2]

On 11 February 1956, Bishop Cesar Maria y Guerrero submitted a petition to Cardinal Federico Tedeschini, who at the time was the Apostolic Dataria to Pope Pius XII requesting to grant a canonical coronation.

Pope Pius XII issued the pontifical decree on the canonical coronation of the image on 15 July 1956. The bull was signed by Secretary Deacon of the Vatican Chapter, Giulio Rossi and notarized by the Secretary to the Apostolic Dataria, Marco Martini. The rite of coronation was held on 8 September 1956, which now commemorates the same day of its current feast.^[4] The people of Pampanga, continue to hold the Cruzada and celebrate the Canonical Coronation of the Virgen de Los Remedios.^[1]

Feast and veneration

The Feast of Virgen de los Remedios of Pampanga is celebrated each 8 September, the Nativity of Mary. In the United States, the Archbishop of Los Angeles, California crowns a replica of the image each year at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.^[5]

In 2010, Capampangans in the Bay Area also started with an annual re-enactment of the canonical coronation. The initial coronation was held at the Our Lady of Peace Shrine in Santa Clara, California. Since then, the event rotates through the Diocese of San Jose, Diocese of Oakland and the Archdiocese of San Francisco and is held every second Sunday of November.

Den magnifika predikan av den store kroatiske missionären fader Ante Gabrić i Vår Frus ursprungliga helgedom, som han höll 1976 vid firandet av helgedomens tusenårsjubileum, publicerades nyligen på YouTube-kanalen Right to Life. Predikan lyssnades på i fullständig tystnad av en mängd troende, och efter den heliga mässan bar den glada ungdomen fader Ante i sina armar. Hans ord som vi för med oss är oerhört viktiga även i dagens tid.

Jag har varit nere i Indien i 38 år. Många ber mig berätta något om hur vi lever där nere, om vårt liv är svårt, om vi är lyckliga eller olyckliga. Redan i början säger jag: 'Vi är lyckliga!' Under de 38 år jag har varit i Indien har jag inte varit olycklig en enda dag. Och folk frågar: 'Så är detta möjligt?' Jag säger 'ja'. Så länge vi lever med Jesus, medan vi offrar oss med Jesus, måste vi vara lyckliga.

Vi äter ris både vid lunchtid och på kvällen när vi har det, vi äter det inte varje dag. Mänskligt sett säger jag igen, det är svårt. Men vi är lyckliga. Vad ger oss lycka, både för oss missionärer och för våra troende? Tron ger oss, bönen ger oss.

Kanske har jag redan skrivit till några av dem om det, och här är jag igen, jag tog nattvarden till en sjuk kvinna, den spetälska Melina. Så länge hon kunde kom hon till kyrkan haltande, hela hennes högra ben ruttnande av spetälska. När hon inte kunde gå, både på händer och fötter. Denna hjältinna brukade komma till vårt lilla kapell i byn Ranigor. Under de senaste två veckorna hade hennes make Goku, alla nyanvända, tagit henne i sina armar till kyrkan, eftersom hon inte ville missa mässan, hon ville inte missa nattvarden. Den sista söndagen när jag kom kunde inte ens det göras. Febern fångade henne så, hon brann, hon höll på att dö. Och hon bad mig att ta med henne nattvarden efter mässan. Och vi tog bort det. Här nere i Indien finns religionsfrihet. Vi kan gå med Jesus i byarna och i staden och sjunga. Vi gick till hennes lilla hydda som Corpus Christi-processionen, jag var tvungen att krypa in i den lilla hyddan, det fanns inget bord, stol eller säng i den, ingenting. Den låg på halmen och på det halmen lade jag korpral och det heliga sakramentet, det var en katedral, en levande katedral i Sundarbans djungler. Och hon tog emot nattvarden.

Kära bröder och systrar, om jag någonsin har sett himlen, har jag sett det i ansiktet på den spetälska Melina. Och vilken underbar bön hon bad, bönen från en sann helgon! Med ett leende på läpparna, med ett leende i hjärtat, bad hon för alla välgörare, med början hos den Helige Fadern i Rom, för syster Antonija, vår kroatiska missionär som var i Bosonti vid tillfället och som skickade henne medicin, för dem som gav henne lite sömn, gräs, eftersom hon hade vattkoppor. Och hon tog emot Jesus. Tro bröder, detta är tro, detta är livet! En rynka? Vi tror att Melina är olycklig, och hennes lycka låg i tron, på Jesus. Jag upprepar, jag såg himlen här. När jag passerade den byn igen i år, och jag inte var närvarande vid hennes död, gick jag till hennes lilla grav som en pilgrimsplats.

Den äldre Ponchu som jag döpte var katekumen, han visste ingenting om Jesus än, han visste bara att han var Gud, att Jesus älskade honom, och han frågade mig: 'Fader, måste jag vänta mycket längre på Jesus?' Nej, jag gav honom heligt dop. Om du bara kunde se lyckan i hans ögon!

Bröder och systrar, när vi ser deras lycka, denna levande tro, hur kan vi då vara rädda för våra svårigheter, hunger och feber?! Jag säger ärligt, man kan aldrig bli trött här, man kan aldrig vara olycklig. Du ser alltid Jesus i deras ögon, i deras hjärtan; och denna Jesus bor också hos oss.

Därför låt oss idag, denna heliga dag, undersöka oss själva om vi verkligen bara har kommit hit som en fest, för att höra en sång, höra predikningar, se våra biskopar och ärkebiskopar, eller om vi har kommit för att se Jesus, för att bevara Jesus i våra hjärtan, för att ge Jesus till andra. Det finns liv, utan det bröder och systrar, jag säger ärligt att jag inte ser om det finns något annat sätt i världen. Om jag inte har Jesus i mig, vad har jag då? Om du ger mig hela världen, hundra bilar, hundra kylskåp och miljoner dollar, vad får jag ut av det? Och gav du mig Jesus, och vi har det, även när jag bär den Jesus i mitt hjärta, oavsett vad mer jag behöver! Och när jag fortfarande kan ge Jesus, och vi alla kan ge Honom, det är vad Vår Fru har gett oss, det är vad vi lär oss av Vår Fru! Hon tog emot Jesus, hon behöll honom, hon gav honom. Låt oss bli hjältar, hjältar som Melina.

Den unge Korno, som jag nyligen döpte, slog honom så illa när hans farbror fick höra att han skulle bli kristen att allt svällde upp över honom. Och denna unga universitetsstudent, den enda universitetsstudenten i hela hans stam, kom till mig, trots att han ännu inte hade blivit döpt: 'Fader, jag är glad idag att jag kunde lida något för Jesus.' Och när hans släktingar ville slå hans farbror för att han hade slagit honom så där, sade han: 'Nej, Jesus sa från korset, förlåt alla!' Den hjälten är nu min kateket i alla de där byarna. Han skäms inte för sin tro, han är inte rädd för att erkänna att han tillhör Jesus, han bär en rosenkrans runt halsen och det är hans stolthet.

Är du rädd för att erkänna att du tillhör Jesus, skäms du för att gå i kyrkan, skäms du för att ta emot nattvarden? Om du inte accepterar honom, var är ditt liv? Om du inte har Jesus, hur ska du då ge Honom? Om du inte ger det, varför kom du då till världen? Varför kom du till världen om du inte kan ge Gud till andra? Guds liv, det är vår lycka där nere!

Mödrar, jag frågar er särskilt, våra familjer är fattiga, men de har barn. Minst fem eller sex barn i varje familj! Gud gav dem det. Vi har inte mycket, lite ris, men det vi har är vi glada för! På påsk, efter den tredje mässan klockan tio på kvällen, fick jag först lite ris, tre små barn satt bredvid mig. Påskfesten var ris och de gav mig ett ägg, ett stekt ägg. Och vi, vi tre och jag, delade upp det i fyra och alla hade fått nog, vi var alla glada. Låt oss vara glada att ge! Särskilt ni mödrar, mödrar, våra föräldrar!

Jag har skrivit till dig om Monis mamma en gång. Jag satt framför missionsstationen, de bar den i en liten korg, vi har inga sådana kliniker där nere. De sa till henne i byn: 'Du kommer att dö, det nionde barnet kommer, döda, lev du'! Och den där hjältemoskan säger 'nej, nej'. De tog henne till vårt sjukhus och herregud räddade henne också, och räddade lilla Moni.

Mina bröder, jag mindes då min avlidna mor, och jag var den nionde. Och om min mor inte hade varit en mor, om hon hade skämts över moderskapet, om hon hade varit rädd, skulle Anthony inte vara här framför er, jag skulle inte kunna fira Jesus idag, jag skulle inte kunna älska vår kära Fru, så med respekt och tacksamhet hälsar jag min avlidna mor på kyrkogården i Metković. Jag tackar henne och ber till vår kära Fru på denna heliga dag i vårt kroatiska folks historia, inför Vår Fru, inför vår heliga drottning Jelena, jag kallar henne helgon eftersom hon var en mor, inför er mödrar, snälla, åh snälla med era hopslagna händer, var våra mödrar, rädda vårt folk med er moderskärlek, rädda vårt fosterland, var mödrar, låt oss inte vara själviska! Nåväl, det är det viktigaste i våra liv. Låt oss offra oss, låt oss inte vara rädda för korset, utan korset, bröder, finns det inget sätt! Om det hade funnits en annan väg skulle Jesus säkert ha valt honom, absolut, men han valde korsvägen, han valde Golgata, han valde korset. Detta är din väg och min, inte bara för oss präster, munkar och nunnor, för var och en av oss. Korset är lycka, att ge allt, att leva Guds liv, långt från synd. Heliga Birgitta Heliga Birgitta är Sveriges och Europas skyddspatron. Hon var länge det enda svenska och nordiska helgonet som har en påves godkännande (Bonifatius IX år 1391) men 5 juni 2016 helgonförklarades även Elisabeth Hesselblad. Heliga Birgitta föddes i Uppland omkring 1302. Hon gifte sig vid 13 års ålder med Ulf Gudmarsson i Östergötland och de fick åtta barn. Vid tiden för Ulfs död 1344 började Birgitta allt oftare få uppenbarelser, som nedtecknades av hennes biktfäder. Uppenbarelserna ledde till att hon ville instifta en ny klosterorden och grunda ett kloster för både munkar och nunnor i Vadstena. För att få grunda en ny klosterorden måste påven ge sitt godkännande och därför reste Birgitta till Rom 1349. Påven bodde då inte i Rom utan i Avignon i Frankrike. Birgitta arbetade intensivt för att få påven att flytta tillbaka till Rom och att få sin nya klosterregel godkänd. Först 1370 godkände påven Urban V Birgittinerorden, Den allra heligaste Frälsarens orden. År 1371, vid 68 års ålder, påbörjade hon en vallfärd till Heliga landet. När hon återkom till Rom våren 1373 var hon försvagad av sjukdom, och den 23 juli avled hon i sin bostad vid nuvarande Piazza Farnese. 1384 invigdes Vadstena kloster. Birgitta själv hade i detalj bestämt hur kyrkan och klostret skulle se ut och hur klostret skulle vara organiserat. Birgittas dotter Katarina blev den första abbedissan. Heliga Birgitta helgonförklarades 7 oktober 1391.
