Augustine,and the little child by the seashore Saint Augustine, a prominent theologian and philosopher was walking along the seashore, deeply contemplating the mystery of the Holy Trinity, how God could be one in essence yet three in persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). As he walked, he noticed a young child (sometimes described as an angel in disguise) diligently scooping water from the ocean with a small shell or spoon and pouring it into a tiny hole in the sand. Curious, Augustine approached and asked the child what they were doing. The child replied that they were trying to empty the entire ocean into the hole. Augustine, amused by the impossibility of the task, pointed out that the ocean was vast and the hole far too small to contain it. The child looked at him and responded that it was equally impossible for Augustine, with his finite human mind, to fully comprehend the infinite mystery of the Trinity. Before Augustine could reply, the child vanished, leaving him in awe and humbled by the encounter. The moral of the story is that human intellect, no matter how profound, has limits when trying to comprehend the infinite mysteries of God, such as the Trinity. It teaches humility, encouraging acceptance that some divine truths are beyond full understanding and must be approached with faith and awe rather than pride in one’s own reasoning.
