Gospel Reading

“Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Mt 1:18-21).

 St. Joseph and St. John of the Cross

St. John of the Cross, prior in Granada, unable to make a journey personally, sent two friars to attend to the Carmelite nuns: “On their return, passing through a new square near the monastery, they met a man with a beautiful countenance... He approached them and asked... Fathers, why does this Order have such a great devotion to St. Joseph?” “Because, our holy Mother Teresa was very devoted to him. He had helped her in all her foundations and she had received many favours from the Lord... so that all the houses which she founded have been placed under the patronage of St. Joseph”. “And you will receive many more favours”, said the mysterious person. On arriving at the monastery, they described everything to St. John of the Cross, who said to them: “Hush! Didn't you recognise him? You must know it was St. Joseph! Go and kneel down before him. But he did not come on your account but on mine, because I have not been as devoted to him as I should have been, but I will be from now on”.

Prayer to St. Joseph

Our glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, who has the power to render impossible things possible, come to my aid at this time of anguish and trial. Take under your protection the serious and difficult situations which I entrust to you ...

Let us end this time of prayer with the community prayer below: 👇

Prayer by Pope Francis

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,
and defend us from every evil.
Amen.
