THE FIRST MARIAN APPARITION WHILE MARY WAS STILL ALIVE ON EARTH?! In the year 40 AD, the Apostle St. James the Greater was preaching in what is now Zaragoza, Spain. His mission was extremely difficult. Discouraged and almost ready to give up, he was praying by the banks of the Ebro River with a few DISCIPLES. Suddenly, a great light appeared. The Blessed Virgin Mary, still living in Jerusalem at the time, bilocated and stood before him on a jasper pillar, surrounded by thousands of angels, holding the Child Jesus. She consoled him, encouraged him to continue his work, and asked him to build a church on that exact spot. She left behind the pillar and a small wooden statue of herself with the Child Jesus, treasures that are still preserved today in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. This is considered the first Marian apparition in Church history and the only one that took place while Mary was still alive on earth. St. James obeyed. He built a small chapel, the first Marian shrine in the world. Strengthened by Our Lady’s visit, he continued his mission, later returned to Jerusalem, and became the first Apostle to be martyred for the faith. Our Lady of the Pillar has protected that place for nearly 2,000 years. Even during the Spanish Civil War, three bombs that fell on the basilica failed to explode. Mary has been standing with the Church from the very beginning, encouraging the discouraged, strengthening the weak, and leading us always to her Son.
