𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗥’𝗦 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘦
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 Peter also fell. He who had sworn fidelity unto
death denied his Master before a servant girl. He who had drawn a
sword in bold defense trembled before accusation. “I know not the
man,” he said. Not once, but three times. The fall of Peter was not
small. It was public. It was deliberate. It was cowardly. And yet his
story does not end in ruin. It ends in tears. Scripture tells us that
after the cock crowed, “the Lord turning looked on Peter.” (Luke
22:61). No rebuke is recorded. No harsh word. Only a look. A look that
penetrated the soul more deeply than any accusation. In that gaze,
Peter saw both his sin and his Savior. He remembered the warning. He
remembered his boast. And he understood his weakness. “And going
forth, he wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:62). Those tears were not despair.
They were contrition. There is a sorrow that leads away from God, and
there is a sorrow that leads toward Him. Saint Paul speaks of “godly
sorrow” that works repentance unto salvation (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Peter’s tears were not self-pity. They were not wounded pride. They
were grief at having offended love. That is the essence of true
contrition, sorrow for sin because it wounds God. Judas regretted his
act, but he did not return. Peter wept and remained near. Judas
allowed guilt to isolate him. Peter allowed sorrow to purify him. The
difference between despair and repentance is direction. Despair turns
inward. Contrition turns toward mercy. Peter’s tears washed his
denial. They did not erase the memory, but they restored friendship.
True contrition requires humility. Peter had boasted, “Though all
shall be scandalized, yet not I.” (Mark 14:29). His confidence was in
himself. His fall exposed that weakness. But humility entered through
failure. When he wept, he was no longer the confident fisherman
promising heroic fidelity. He was a sinner in need of grace. And that
humility prepared him to be strengthened. The risen Christ would later
ask him three times, “Lovest thou Me?” (John 21:15–17). Three denials
were healed by three professions of love. Mercy does not humiliate; it
restores. The tears of Peter did not disqualify him. They purified
him. The one who fell became the rock. The one who denied became the
shepherd. Grace transforms weakness when weakness is surrendered. Holy
Week confronts each soul with its own denials. We may not stand in a
courtyard before a fire, but we deny Christ when we choose silence
instead of witness, comfort instead of obedience, compromise instead
of truth. The cock still crows in conscience. The question remains:
when you recognize your failure, what do you do? Do not fear tears. Do
not fear sorrow for sin. Fear only the hardness that refuses it. A
heart that can still weep is a heart still alive. Contrition is not
weakness; it is strength rightly directed. It acknowledges fault
without excusing it. It trusts mercy without presuming upon it. If you
have denied through weakness, return. If you have failed in courage,
return. If you have fallen into compromise, return. The look of Christ
is not destruction. It is invitation. The Cross stands as proof that
mercy is stronger than betrayal. Peter’s tears changed history. They
changed him. Let your own sorrow be honest. Let it be humble. Let it
move you not toward despair, but toward confession and renewed
fidelity. The difference between Judas and Peter was not sinlessness.
It was response. One despaired. The other repented. Choose tears that
lead to life.Have you ever heard of Saint Longinus? Saint Longinus is
identified as the Roman centurion who pierced the side of Jesus Christ
with a spear during the Crucifixion, as described in the Gospel of
John (19: 34). St. Longinus was nearly blind, and his sight was
miraculously restored when the blood and water from Jesus’ side
touched his eyes. This event, along with the signs at the Crucifixion:
darkness, an earthquake, and the tearing of the temple veil, led him
to declare, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Mark 15: 39, Matthew
27: 54). Following this, Longinus is said to have converted to
Christianity, left his military post, and became a monk, possibly in
Cappadocia. He preached the Gospel and, according to some accounts,
faced martyrdom. One tradition describes him being tortured: his teeth
and tongue removed; yet miraculously continuing to speak, even
destroying pagan idols. He was eventually beheaded, and his martyrdom
is said to have restored the sight of a blind governor touched by
Longinus blood. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic
Church. St. Longinus is often associated with the Holy Lance (or Spear
of Destiny), a relic believed to be the spear he used, which is
preserved in places like St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. He is
the patron saint of soldiers, the blind and those with eye disorders,

Judas did not fall in a single moment. His betrayal was not born in one sudden act of hatred. It was the end of a slow interior decline. Sin rarely destroys a soul instantly. It begins quietly, with small permissions granted to weakness. A tolerated fault. A defended attachment. A compromise excused because it seems insignificant. The tragedy of Judas is not only that he betrayed Christ, it is that he prepared himself for betrayal long before the kiss in the garden. He was chosen by Christ. He walked with Him. He heard the Sermon on the Mount. He witnessed the raising of the dead. He received authority among the Twelve. Yet closeness to holiness does not guarantee fidelity. One may stand near grace while secretly nurturing disorder. Exterior association with the sacred cannot replace interior conversion. The heart must be guarded. Scripture reveals that Judas kept the money bag and was dishonest in small things (John 12:6). Theft preceded treachery. Attachment preceded betrayal. Sin hardens gradually. The conscience weakens each time compromise is justified. What begins as a minor dishonesty becomes an acceptable habit. What becomes habitual becomes character. And character shapes destiny. Judas likely struggled interiorly with disappointment. Christ did not fulfill earthly ambitions. The Kingdom did not unfold as expected. Unchecked frustration becomes resentment. Resentment becomes distance. Distance makes betrayal conceivable. When the chief priests offered silver, the decision was easier because the soul had already drifted. The price of betrayal is often shockingly small when love has grown cold. Yet his final ruin was not the kiss, it was despair. After recognizing the gravity of his sin, Judas felt remorse. But remorse is not repentance. He returned the silver, but he did not return to Christ. He acknowledged guilt, yet he refused mercy. Despair whispered that his sin was greater than forgiveness. That lie sealed his fall. Peter also denied Christ. But Peter wept and returned. Judas regretted and withdrew. The difference was not the magnitude of failure, but the response to it. Despair is as dangerous as presumption. Presumption delays repentance. Despair refuses it. Both reject humility. True contrition runs toward mercy, not away from it. Judas teaches that sin tolerated becomes sin strengthened. Attachment defended becomes loyalty divided. The heart that compromises repeatedly will not stand firm in crisis. The narrow gate requires vigilance in small things. Betrayal begins in secrecy long before it becomes visible. Examine yourself. Are there small compromises you defend? Habits you excuse? Resentments you nourish? Attachments you refuse to surrender? The path of Judas begins quietly. But it can end differently, if you choose repentance. Holy Week places before us both warning and mercy. The Cross is proof that no sin exceeds God’s love, if the soul returns. Do not let guilt turn into despair. Do not let weakness become identity. Do not let compromise grow unchecked. Judas fell gradually. You do not have to. Guard your conscience. Reject compromise. Run toward confession. And remain near Christ not only in body, but in will.> >
